On a recent evening, members of unions from the Iowa City Federation of Labor and other activists urged customers at the Target store in Coral Ridge Mall to boycott American Crystal Sugar products and support the workers who have been locked out since Aug. 1, 2011. See more in this video.

Working Class Heroes

Good evening, brothers and sisters. I’m Rich Trumka, President of the AFL-CIO. I’m a third-generation coal miner from Nemacolin, Pennsylvania.

I’m here on behalf of millions of people who do the work of America.

Delegates and friends of Labor

I would like to ask that everyone start to have conversations with your members, friends, neighbors and anyone else who will listen. Let’s make it clear this year that the holiday everyone celebrates known as Labor Day is a creation of Organized Labor. I believe many in this country have taken for granted such holidays our forefathers fought so hard to attain for not just Organized Labor, but for all. This is not just another day off of work that corporations found in their heart to give to workers. Labor Day is a holiday to honor those who have toiled to make a better life for our families and a stronger country for all. So please share the facts about Labor Day this year with everyone , we can no longer afford to be silent about matters we have fought so hard to obtain, and then to sustain. Remember, WE EARNED IT!

“Prosperity Economics” provides economic blueprint for long-term growth

ALEC's extreme agenda has included templates to change our laws to make it harder for juries to hold vigilantes who kill people accountable, for American citizens to vote, for Congress to limit the distorting and corrupting influence of money in our elections, and numerous other bills that undermine the rights and opportunities of Americans.

In 2008, the Iowa Legislature approved a law to protect all Iowa property by establishing the electrical inspection program. In an attempt to ensure the safety of farmers, their families, employees and livestock, non-residential farm buildings were specifically included in the electrical inspection program.

We are pleased and relieved that the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Today’s decision means that we can continue moving full speed ahead to implement and build upon the Affordable Care Act. We have no illusion that the destination has been reached, and we are more committed than ever to the hard work necessary to achieve our dream of quality health care for all.

While both have strong characteristics that would make for a good Auditor – especially their shared opposition to Voter ID laws that disenfranchise voters - their knowledge and experience dealing with the above-mentioned labor issues needs improvement. Consequently, the WIN committee decided not to recommend either candidate for endorsement.

 Jean Martin Memorial
Jean Martin, AFSCME Local 12, passed away on May 16, 2011.
Jean’s commitment to the Iowa City Federation of Labor was renowned. Not a single activity that this body has done was done without her. You saw her working at our Chili Supper, the League of Women Voters event we sponsored, the food drive, the fair booth, Labor Day, the homecoming parade, and recycling aluminum.
In addition to her labor activities, Jean was an e n v i r o n m e n t a l i s t , a humanitarian, a Democrat, an animal lover, a bicyclist, and a cherished member of the Iowa City Senior Center. To honor Jean we are helping to raise
money to fund a facility at the Iowa City Terry Trueblood Recreation Center located on Sand Road.
Our goal is to raise enough money to fund a shelter house that would be named in honor of Jean Martin and the Iowa City Federation of Labor. Donations can be sent to Prairie Voices Productions, PO Box 3411, Iowa City, IA 52244. Write Jean Martin Memorial on the memo line.
We urge our affiliates, individual union members, and our friends, that Jean cared about so much, to consider contributing to this Memorial Fund.
